Fortunately, these misperceptions are rapidly melting away. People are encouraged to seek help for all types of stress and poor emotional well-being. A tremendous number of resources are available to help anyone who asks for assistance and support. Even the military is instituting a system of buddy care for suicide prevention backed up by medical and chaplain resources.
In most cases, the help provided is beneficial. The major problem is persuading someone to ask for assistance in the mental health arena. Pilots and controllers remain some of the most difficult groups to persuade to seek mental health assistance, even when they can barely function. Some of this reluctance is related to the personality types that tend to seek aviation careers or hobbies: confident, independent, always in control, able to compartmentalize problems and generally healthy.
Another major obstacle is fear of having to report any counseling or treatment to the FAA and permanently losing their medical certificate and perhaps their career.

Some things are going on at work for me, causing a fair amount of daily anxiety, and it's not a situation that I can easily get out of I own the company. I consulted my MD who suggested that I take Xanax for days or so while I work through this period.
I've started on the Xanax, and self grounded. The Xanax works really well, and I'm functioning normally. My intention is to get off the Xanax, which I am now taking as necessary, after some of the stuff that's going on is over. Can I just start flying again in a couple of month and report this situation at my next medical, or do I need to do some kind of interim reporting?

I don't need it, nor have I done much research or seen the doc about it, just looking to see if anyone can relate, before I actually do so. It's worth doing a search. Not so long ago, SSRI's were a big no no, due to the potential for their mind warping properties sic. However, it would seem that pilot's take these, with good effect, without feeling the need to crash their plane into the ground or buildings.

I received this from the FAA because 14 years ago my doctor prescribed Xanax and I was on it for 2 years after a series of stressful life events. I regret this now and have never since needed it.
Is there anything else I need to ask for like tests for the medication in my system? Also, would this experience in my life hinder me from getting a first class medical in the future?
